Square Enix trademarks Lara Croft: Reflections, which definitely isn't single player DLC

Another map pack? Or a sequel?.
Of note: Reflections is also the name of the Ubisoft studio that developed Driver: San Francisco. I thus deduce EITHER that Tanner will shortly be available as a playable character, with his own "reborn" narrative and horrendous QTE death scenes, OR that Tomb Raider multiplayer is about to get vehicle support. Or that Square Enix is working on a spin-off of some kind, possibly in the vein of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light...

Tomb Raiders Lara Croft: no longer just a pretty face

As a female lead character, Lara Croft has had to endure an unfair amount of polygonal stereotyping, crude sexualisation and exploitation, all of which combined have overshadowed almost everything the heroine has achieved in her rein at the helm of the Tomb Raider franchise, to the point where her relevance and the Tomb Raider brands relevance itself in modern gaming has been altogether questioned.

Review: Tomb Raider (DarkZero)

"Ive never been a fan of the Tomb Raider series. During the jump from 2D to 3D back in the 90, games went through a weird phase, causing a number of issues for player and camera movement. The first couple of Tomb Raider games are a prime example of these problems, which really took away from the experience, annoying players instead of entertaining them - although, I did enjoy a few of the newer games in the franchise, namely the twin-stick adventure Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, and what little I played of Underworld. Still, I never thought Id be excited for a Lara Croft return... until E3 2011 when I sat wide-eyed, jaw-to-the-floor for the entirety of Tomb Raiders release trailer." (DarkZero)

A Look Back at Lara Crofts Last Rebirth

Added: 20.03.2013 13:21 | 4 views | 0 comments

Gamer Euphoria writes: ''ust a few weeks ago, Lara Croftthe original artifact-stealing queenmade a grand return after several years of lying dormant and allowing her male counterparta certain Nathan Draketo rush in and steal her thunder. For the latest iteration in the old franchise, Crystal Dynamics opted to reboot the character entirely, as well as the series itself. But it wasnt the first time Lara Croft had been put through the creative grinder in order to rejuvenate the franchise; the last time it happened was back in 2006 with Tomb Raider Legend, a game that although not rebooting the character, changed the whole direction for the series.''

Tomb Raider Review | DaxGamer

DaxGamer's Ed: "The name Lara Croft has been a house hold name in the gaming industry since debuting in 1996 with titles being released for the Sega Genesis, Playstation, Playstation 2, PC, PCS3, Xbox 360, Wii PSP. The games were a mixture of action, platforming and puzzle solving with the latter being the main focus for the franchise. The series would enjoy its fair share of success however; it has stumbled with recent releases with the exception of the Tomb Raider Legend and 2008s Tomb Raider Underworld. Five years later and we have a new Tomb Raider title albeit a reboot for the long running franchise. The newest title is the 5th in the series to be developed by Crystal Dynamics and attempts to take Lara Croft back to her roots. Is the latest release the much needed revival that gamers have been waiting for?"

When a company announces that they are rebooting a cherished franchise, they have a very fine line to walk. Mess with the core concept of the franchise and consumers wont be happy, but dont alter the franchise enough and customers will think that you were not being creative and the reboot was a waste. Its been a long time since we last saw Lara Croft in a full-fledged adventure. Thankfully, Crystal Dynamics and Square-Enix took their time in rebooting the classic franchise and delivered one of the best games of 2013.
